Sabyasachi Mukherjee is an Indian Fashion Designer from Kolkata, West bengal. He was born on 23rd February 1974 to a middle class Bengali family in Kolkata. His mother, Sandhya Mukherjee worked in a government supported Art College and had deep interest towards handicrafts. His father, Shukumar Mukherjee lost his job when Sabyasachi was just 15 years and paying for education was a tough road. Sabyasachi’s sister named Shingini Mukherjee (Payal), who is 7 years younger to him, manages the business of the label.
Sabyasachi Mukherjee wanted to study at NIFT. When he expressed his interest in designing clothes, his parents disagreed and refused to pay for his tuition, since they wanted him to be an engineer. Sabyasachi sold all his books and paid for his own education, while he pursued a degree at one of India’s most prestigious fashion schools, NIFT. He paid himself for admission form and passed the exam.
After his graduation, with numerous awards as a student, he opened up his own workshop, and started his career from there. Since 1999, he has sold Designer Merchandise using the Label named Sabyasachi. He is one of the Associate Designer Members of Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI). He is the youngest board member of the National Museum of Indian Cinemas.
When one thinks Sabyasachi, one thinks Saree, Lehanga and Bridal Wear, and that is how closely these are connected and have been for several years in Indian fashion. His designs are the designs of the past, present, and the future, and that’s what makes him one of the leading contemporary Indian designers.
